When I see something I like, I get inspired and am compelled to create. I almost always use references, but I don’t copy what I see, I just use it as a starting point. I might use the same concept, or the same mechanism or technique, but I always adapt it to my own design. For me, it’s all about realizing MY vision – realizing someone else’s vision that has already been realized isn’t worth my time and energy. If I want someone else’s flower pot or throw pillow, I can go buy it. This also means I don’t follow patterns. To clarify, I might refer to a pattern to get important structural details like the length of a size 12 month dress, or the proper height of a dining room chair, but my finished project will not be the same as theirs.
Often, artists or crafters limit themselves to one particular technique, identifying themselves as a “painter,” or “potter,” or “quilter.” I don’t think that way. I start with the object I want to create that day and pick the technique and tools that make the most sense for that object. If I want to make a coffee cup, I get out the clay. If I want to make a pin cushion, I get out the fabric and fiber fill. I’d get really bored if I only stuck with one technique, just as a chef would get really bored if they only ever worked with chicken and broccoli. I love chicken and broccoli, but sometimes you need to make a birthday cake.

What I’m thinking about working on after that: a lap desk, and a needle-felted bunny
